Welcome Summer 2010!

// June 16th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // blog

Apparently I’ve taken a “blog-cation” for the past few months…or maybe it’s just this thing called school that stole my attention. Whatever the case, I am hoping to get back on the blogging horse and get writing! In the short week (and a half since I didn’t finish this post right away) that I have been on summer break, one (of the many) things I have done is make a digital scrapbook layout of some summertime goals. One goal is to blog at least twice a week…so, can I do it? Maybe if I get into that habit I’ll actually continue once school starts again in the fall at the end of July!

A quick update: the beautiful “little man” in this photo is almost 10 months old (ohmygoshibetterprepareforhisfirstbirthday!!!), has 5 teeth with 3 more coming in (thank you, God, for teething being remarkably smooth for us, really…really…thankful!), is crawling around (and pretty much finds anything he’s not supposed to get into rather than the plethora of toys out for him), and pretty much shovels any food placed in front of him into his mouth (seriously-not a food he hasn’t enjoyed thus far).

The last week and a half has been wonderful! I have been able to spend so much time with my husband and baby boy. I have long been wanting to try some new recipes…particularly from some easy cooking sites I stalk. I have expressed to Grant on more than one occasion that I wish we had a bigger kitchen, and freezer, so I could make a bunch of meals to put in the freezer. Then, when the craziness of life hits we have great meals easily accessible to us! Well, I did go ahead and make a few things, since having a larger kitchen probably won’t happen for awhile. I made a batch of whole wheat pancakes in Gavin sizes so we have something quick to pull out and heat up for him for breakfast or snack time. They were delicious for breakfast and then I froze the leftovers! I also made some mini sweet potato muffins, also a hit!! In the same week I cranked out homemade apple-pear sauce (again much in the freezer, frozen in ice cube trays so there are smaller portions to thaw), parmesan chicken, and shredded BBQ chicken. Of what I made, all are “keepers” as far as the recipes go. Delightful! Another one of my goals for the summer is to cook more, so far, so good…I just need to keep the momentum going!

2 months

// October 21st, 2009 // No Comments » // blog

It’s already been 2 months.  Time is a funny thing. The past two months has seemingly flown by, yet it seems like we’ve been a family of three for much longer.  The last month has brought more exciting developments in our little guy.

He now smiles responsively.  We can often get him to smile using various tactics…Daddy “honking” Gavin’s nose, Daddy making car noises while playing with Gavin’s legs, well, Daddy making sound effects can often prompt a smile.  What I love about Gavin’s smile is that sometimes it’s almost like he’s holding it back…but you can see it coming in his eyes.  Then he lets one half start to grin…kind of a smirk…and finally he’ll erupt into an ear-to-ear gummy smile! It’s definitely something that doesn’t get old.  Every time he busts out one of these beauties, it’s as if it’s the first time I’ve seen it and I can’t help but to smile from ear to ear as well.  Baby smiles are just contagious!

Other than smiling, Gavin has also found his thumb.  We’re not using a pacifier with him, and I find it cute when he finds his thumb to soothe himself.  Maybe that’s not good and he’ll suck his thumb forever…but right now he uses it to calm cries and to get himself to sleep.  There have been a couple of mornings the last week where we go to get hi up and he’s laying in there, sleeping while sucking on his finger.  He doesn’t quite make a fist when he sucks his thumb, generally, but instead has his remaining 4 fingers palming/clawing his face! Again, pretty stinking cute :) .

He seems to be drooling like crazy, as well as making spit bubbles (as evidenced in this picture). Though the drool means messy wetness for most of the day, the spit bubbles crack me up!

This month we were able to make a few trips back home to visit.  We were even able to spend a Sunday at home and visit our church there.  It was nice to introduce Gavin to people who have meant a lot to us.  Gavin also started daycare twice a week, and he has handled it very well. He’s being as good there as he has been for us at home.

Another month has passed…and we are trying to treasure every minute as time seems to pass so quickly!

Sweet sleep

// October 3rd, 2009 // No Comments » // blog

Because Gavin is such a great sleeper (I am well aware we are lucky in that regard!!) rarely do I feel the need to nap when he is napping.  However, there really are few things sweeter than napping while your newborn is on your chest/belly! To hear his sweet breaths and sleep noises are wonderful, and the way he nestles in until he gets comfy is an amazing feeling! This picture cracks me up because Daddy caught me sleeping but Gavin seems to be a little awake or dreaming something pretty funny. His facial expression is quite interesting!! I’m hoping we can sneak in another nap before I head back to school in 16 days (more on that later…).
