Diapers

We got a big shipment of cloth diapers the other day, enough to finish our stash for awhile anyway.  When we found out we were pregnant, I began researching a lot of things, one of which wad cloth diapers.  Josh and Jillian are the ones who introduced them to us, and they are the only people we personally know who use them.  There are a crazy amount of options out there for cloth diapering: sized, one-size (that are supposed to fit birth through potty training), pockets, all-in-ones, pre-folds, covers (that you use for some and not others), all-in-twos, organic, microfiber, bamboo, and on and on. It was slightly overwhelming, so we went to a diaper class in Bloomington at Pinstripes and PolkaDots.  This was highly useful, as the consultant helped us match our lifestyle and preferences to the diapers that would work best for us.  We also got to feel all of the diapers and see how they are used.

We’ve been primarily cloth diapering since Gavin was born, though in pre-folds and covers and a few XS bumgenius all-in-ones that we got at Cotton Babies in STL.  Once he’d gained enough weight we started using the  bumGenius organic one-size diaper and the Bumgenius 3.0 (though we only had 3 of the former and 1 of the latter).  We love these diapers…they fit well, have only leaked due to my mistakes, and even fit my friend’s almost 2 year old daughter!  I couldn’t be happier about our decision to cloth diaper.  It will save us money in the long run (we’ve spent maybe $350 total on our stash and what we have could last us until Gavin’s out of diapers!), it’s satisfying not to put them in the trash after you take them off, and they’re pretty darn cute! I’m thankful that Grant loves them just as much as I do, and that our daycare is happy to use them, too! Today was Gavin’s first day at Children’s House and there were no diaper problems.  I’d encourage anyone who is expecting in the near future to at least explore the option of cloth diapering.  It really isn’t as difficult (or gross) as everyone some people make it seem.  We have to do diaper laundry every other day, but we don’t mind at all (especially since you don’t have to fold them!).
